Bradenton: The Florida City with a Big History
Florida is known for many reasons. Walt Disney World welcomes millions of guests each year, our beaches are filled with paradise-seeking tourists, and anglers and golfers from across the globe seek our blue waters and gorgeous courses for their next big tale. But what many tourists don’t understand is that Florida history is rich, beautiful, and unique. Few places exemplify that quite like our very own Bradenton.
In addition to being known for its laid-back experiences and picturesque landscapes, Bradenton has honored the traditions of the past. If you haven’t learned about the history in our backyard, take a look at these local preservation sites.
Step Back in Time at Manatee Village
Ever wonder what life was like in Florida before Disney and air conditioning? Manatee Village is committed to showing you just that! The village consists of 14 different historical points, including a town hall, general store, and a train caboose. Each one provides a first-hand look at the historical events and everyday people who make up the history of Manatee County. The best part is that Manatee Village is free for anyone to visit, and most of the aree is disability-friendly. History waits for everyone at Manatee Village!
Take The Most Creative Stroll of Your Life
Village of the Arts is a collective of historical houses in Bradenton that are each designed with an artistic flair. Explore the village’s self-described eclectic vibe, with many artistic styles to explore and purchase from. Even better, on the first Friday and Saturday of the month, the village comes alive with music, food, and independent artists. It’s a monthly art walk!
Take Me Time Along the Manatee River
The oceans may be hotspots for those looking to experience Florida, but don’t forget just how beautiful it can be to walk along the Manatee river. Thankfully, our community has the perfect space just for that very adventure. The Bradenton Riverwalk is a one-and-a-half mile journey along the Manatee River. It includes rest areas to watch the river flow by, local artwork, a family splash pad, discovery areas, and maps to guide you along the way. It’s the perfect way to start your day or end date night — perhaps after eating at PIER 22 Restaurant or Mattison’s Riverwalk Grille.
Take Part in a Florida Tradition: Fishing
Fishing has long been part of Florida’s economy, and its storied history isn’t without big fishing tales. Explore the resilient history of Florida’s fishing community at the Cortez Historic Fishing Villages. You will see old fishing houses, a shoreline that’s been preserved from modern practices, and a museum that outlines our fishing past. This is the perfect stop for the angler in your life or for the history buff who loves Florida tales.
